Pima Cotton, Gossypium Barbadense, is the finest and most appreciated type of cotton in the world. The silky luster and extreme softness result from the ideal conditions in the northern coastal valleys of Peru, where it is cultivated. Often referred to as the 'king of cotton', Pima cotton is a type of extra-long staple cotton. The longer the staple of the cotton, the better the quality of the cotton.

The harvesting of Peruvian Pima Cotton is done by hand, and it is this careful hand harvesting that results in a brilliant white shade.

Through the spinning and weaving process that turns the raw cotton crops into its finished material, the longer fibre length means fewer fibre ends are exposed. The result is a silkier, smoother material that resists pilling and holds its shape and luster much longer. Pima is also the strongest of all cotton, which also helps to add to its durability.

It’s known locally there as ‘gamuza’ which is Spanish for ‘suede’ on account of its incredible softness. While most of the world’s Pima cotton is grown in Peru, some is cultivated in parts California, Texas and Arizona in the United States – where it is known under the brand Supima cotton. We believe Peruvian Pima to be superior as it is picked entirely by hand, leading to fewer imperfections and an even silkier finish. It’s also better for the environment and results in pure white fibres that take incredibly well to dyes.
