What clothing essentials do you need for your newborn baby? - PEPA AND CO

Congratulations – it won’t be long now until you’re welcoming your new arrival into the world. And as an expectant parent, it can sometimes be overwhelming when it comes to what you will need for your little ones first few months. When it comes to clothing, you will need plenty of essentials to keep your newborn warm, comfortable and clean. To make things easy, here’s our checklist of clothing essentials for your newborn baby.

BODYSUITS

The most classic and versatile piece for any little one, they’re the perfect item to layer under knitted sets to keep your newborn warm as they feel the cold easier than we do. You can never have enough of these wardrobe staples, always go for 100% cotton for softness and breathability. Either go for basic styles or for something special go for a patterned frill or peter pan collar.

PYJAMAS

The list wouldn’t be complete with pyjamas (which don’t always have to be worn at night, they can be ideal for playtime too). We would recommend pima cotton – both super soft and hypoallergenic, it’s made with newborn skin in mind. Always look for the options that allow for easy dressing and nappy changing, poppers will be your new best friend.

KNITTED SETS

For the cooler months it’s important to keep your newborn warm and snug, a knitted set made from 100% merino wool layered over a bodysuit is the perfect outfit. Always go for something soft to avoid irritating their delicate skin.

SOCKS

Babies are very delicate, and they must always remain warm but not overheated, which is why newborns need to wear socks. Keeping your little ones comfortable is enough of a reason to have them wear it, as it is known that a comfortable baby is a happy baby. And of course, babies are notorious for kicking their socks off, so look for options with sturdy elastic tops!

BIBS

The most important item on the list of clothing essentials for your newborn is bibs. Your little one will probably stain these daily so it’s best to stock up as much as you can.

BLANKETS

Whether it’s summer or winter, a baby blanket will serve various purposes for your little one and is something they won’t grow out of straight away. You can choose a thin, cotton blanket for swaddling or a cashmere for the winter months perfect for nap time or chilly walks.

BONNETS

There’s a reason the hospital nurses pop a hat on your little ones heads, even before a diaper: Since newborns get cold easily, a bonnet is a great way to regulate their body temperature. Whether you choose a jersey style or knitted, always have one in your baby bag to be prepared for all weather occasions.

TOWELS

Studies have shown that bath time is critical for your little one's cognitive and emotional development. It may be nerving at first, but it will eventually become a family favourite! It’s important to have a super soft, absorbent towel that will keep them warm… a hood is advantageous too (and very cute).

SLEEPING BAGS

This may not be the first essential that comes to mind when you’re getting prepared to have a newborn, but it can be a lifesaver for some. Designed to ensure your little one has a great night’s sleep, the sleeping bag ensures covers aren’t kicked off during the night, letting your newborn get the sleep it needs.
