Royal Christening: A celebration through history

Royal Christening: A celebration through history - PEPA AND CO

No matter what year, or even decade, the elegance and timelessness of Christening Gowns will never falter!

As the Royals prepare for Prince Louis’ christening, we look back at the history of the christening dress and the beautiful tradition of the royal gown.

Traditions go hand in hand with the royal family, and their christenings are no exception! For 163 years, royal babies wore the same dress, originally commissioned by Queen Victoria, for her daughter Princess Victoria, in 1841. Made with Spitalfields silk and Honiton lace, the garment was designed to uphold tradition and impress, decade after decade.

After each ceremony, the gown would be washed with spring water and stored in a dark room – no dry cleaning allowed!

Alongside this gown, Victoria also commissioned the Silver Gilt Lily Font - part of the crown jewels and over 170 years old, which is still used in royal christenings today.

From Queen Victoria to Prince William and more, 62 babies in total were christened in the gown. This tradition came to an end in 2004, when, after Lady Louise Windsor was christened, the gown was deemed too delicate to continue using. A replica was made using similar techniques and materials and will be used by the royal family for years to come.
